Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. The Lord has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises! Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody! With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord! Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who dwell in it! Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity. -Psalm 98

He Has Done Marvelous Things

Why do we sing? "For He has done Marvelous things! ... His holy arm has worked salvation!" He didn't just work it, He has made it known, in the sight of all! So we, like the Israelites, "Break forth into joyous song!" The sea and all that is in it, the rivers clap, the hills sing, All creation praises His name! Shouldn't we? Yes!

I find it interesting that the writer follows all of this urging to break forth in worship with, "for", or "because". Do this before the Lord, because He comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity." It sure sounds like the Lord really wants us to sing His praises, in fact, He commands it! This beautiful Psalm has even placed our worship into the realm of considerations that determine the judgment we receive from God! That ought to get us thinking about what we are doing when we lift our voices to Him, or what we are doing when we don't.

If we genuinely believe that Jesus Christ is who He says He is, and we love Him as such, we won't be able to resist joyous song & praise! So let's do it church!

Eager to worship with you,

Joseph
