As an evangelical Christian, I believe God is sovereign and that He does what He wills and that nothing and no one can prevent Him from carrying out His plans.
In my earlier years, that was something that I wrestled with. But now, having grown weary of wrestling, I find God's sovereignty to be a great source of comfort. I am confident that the Lord is in control, even when things don’t turn out the way that I would like them to. I can rest assured that His perfect will is being accomplished in my life.
But such an orthodox perspective can become distorted when we forget that this sovereign God of ours is also a loving Father... our loving Father. And our loving Father is good in all of His ways. Jesus described the relationship this way:
Yes, our God is the sovereign Lord of all, AND He is our good & loving Father.
I'm finding that keeping the Truth of God's sovereignty balanced by the truth of His goodness & love is essential. Otherwise my relationship with Him can easily become cold & distant. I'm praying the same for each of you in my South Church family.
Blessings to you all!
