The Necessity Of Prayer Over Scripture

Joseph Morrow - August 14, 2017

Do you pray that the Lord would unlock the mysteries of His word to you when you read scripture? To lead you on a journey that leads to treasure in the Living word of God? I fear that if we don't we are sure to miss it. As pastor Paige said on Sunday we may read/hear and not understand. We may think we understand, perhaps we do on an intellectual level, but completely miss the hidden glories in the Word that transforms us into new creatures, people who have been lead to the pearl of great price (the riches found in God's Word) by the mercy of the Holy Spirit's revealing the Truth of the gospel to us, revealing Christ to us.

Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.(Psalm 119:18) All of us know what it is like to read without seeing “wondrous things.” We have stared at the most glorious things without seeing them as glorious. We have seen unspeakable love without feeling loved. We have seen immeasurable wisdom and felt no admiration. We have seen the holiness of wrath and felt no trembling. Which means we are seeing without seeing (Matthew 13:13). This is why we must weave the thread of God-dependent prayer into our reading: “Show me your glory” (Exodus 33:18). God has made plain that the path to seeing his peculiar glory is prayer. How much light have we forfeited by failure to pray over the word we are reading! “You do not have, because you do not ask” (James 4:2).
-John Piper

Piper nails it! What are we thinking if we aren't praying over the Word? We are "forfeiting" wondrous, glorious, Holy things if we don't pray. I don't know about you, but I want to be given understanding to see the absolute wonder in Scripture. Father, show us Christ! Reveal to us your glory! Lead us to unending treasure in your Holy word, for your name, and your glory, amen.

Eager to worship with you family,

-Joseph
