Repo'd

Ever feel like you're on a religious roller coaster? Sometimes up, sometimes down. If so, could it be that you're on the wrong ride?

In today's passage, the Lord Jesus depicts a frightful state: demonic repossession worse than before. Perhaps you or someone you know has been there before: summer camp or a spiritual retreat found you cleaning house a bit, only to return to sinful vomit in a matter of a couple of weeks.

So what's the answer? If you're in His family, you already know the Answer: Jesus.

Join us today as we seek, once again, to abide in His Word.

Matthew 12.43-50 (esv)

43 “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation.”

46 While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. 48 But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

growing in truth: This week, Jesus continues to caution the Pharisees if they don't recognize him as the Messiah then they are not part of his family.

What is a clean spirit? God: The Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit. See Revelation 4.8-11

What is an unclean spirit? Satan and his demons. See Ephesians 6.12, 1 John 3.8

What is Jesus teaching in Matthew 12.43-45?

Unclean spirits prefer to inhabit people rather than waterless places. Unclean spirits can be evicted but they will not find rest and will eventually want to return to possess a person. Upon returning if the house is empty even if orderly and clean the spirit will enter and bring along worse spirits.

So what are we to do?

We should clean house but (we) need to be washed in the blood of Jesus. If Jesus (the strong man) occupies us then the unclean spirit will not be able to take possession of us. See Matthew 12.27-30, Mark 3.11.

Why does Jesus talk about family here?

He is continuing to develop the idea that you are with him or against him there is no neutral ground. You are in the family or not. Not even his mother or his apostles are privileged by proximity to him. Only those who know God's and are obedient to his will. See Matthew 12.50, Ephesians 1.2-8.

sharing life together: How as a family can we help you with your spiritual house cleaning? By encouraging one another to be obident to Gods will. Through prayer, encouragement, testimony.

living on mission: How as a church family could we be better about bringing our hope in Jesus to our friends, family and the community?
