Who are you? How do you know? Can we really know ourselves, our lives, our friends, our community, our world... anything without knowing the Maker of all things? Where do you begin and end? Can you know without knowing God who is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and Omega?
South Church, can we be a rescue mission, a family desperately depending on almighty God, well-equipped to point others to their hope of life, without knowing Him who is eternal life?
"This is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent." -Jn 17.3
We exist to glorify God by enjoying Him forever! But we cannot enjoy who we do not know.
By His grace, as the light of Genesis is exposed before our eyes and ears, may we learn more of who He is, how He is, and, therefore, who and how we are to glorify and enjoy Him forever.
Introducing Your Creator
If you were gonna introduce yourself to the world that you had made by the power of your word, what would be the first thing you'd say?
God knows exactly where to begin (and where to end, for that matter!): In the beginning... God.
Before anything else was, "I Am". Why start here? What makes these words so important?
Is this a valid description of the way the world began? What of other historical creation accounts from the Babylonians, Egyptians, etc.? How does Moses' account in Genesis mesh with them, or does it at all?
Knowing our origin and destination matters... in fact, it defines us: who we are, how we ought to be... all our lives are defined by the answer to one question: Who is God?
1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
