The Abomination of Desolation

"The Abomination of Desolation" Sounds pretty fierce, doesn't it? But what does it mean? What was Jesus talking about, and when would such desolation occur?

As mentioned in last week's sermon, theologians have argued for years as to what and when were all of the events in Matthew 24 to take place. When it comes to things like prophecy, there is always the temptation to just shrug off or "go shallow" things more difficult to understand. But, as the apostle Peter encourages us, when it comes to the prophetic Scriptures, "we would do well to pay attention [to them] as to a lamp shining in a dark place."

If you're able, please turn in your copy of God's Word to Matthew 24, verse 15.

Matthew 24.15-21 (esv)

15 “So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, 18 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 19 And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 20 Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be.

living on mission: THE JEWS LOST THEIR PLACE TO WORSHIP WHEN THE TEMPLE WAS DESTROYED. JESUS PREDICTED THE TEMPLES DESTRUCTION. YOU WOULD THEN THINK THEY WOULD WORSHIP JESUS. HE PREDICTED IT AND IT HAPPENED. WHY WONT THEY WORSHIP HIM?

SAME REASON OTHERS WONT WORSHIP JESUS THEY ARE STRONG IN THEMSELVES AND THEIR EFFORTS THEY DONT WANT TO BE RESCUED. THEY DONT WANT TO SHARE THE VICTORY. THEY REFUSE TO SURRENDER. TRUSTING TRUSTING THEIR SACRIFICES, THEIR WORK TO COVER THEIR SIN.

THE JEWS ARE TRAPED. THE LAW IS WRITTEN ON THEIR HEARTS. THEY KNOW THEY ARE SINNERS AND YET THEY HAVE NO PLACE FOR WORSHIP. NO PLACE FOR THE REQUIRED ATONEMENT SACRIFICES. EFFECTIVELY NO PLACE TO PRACTICE THEIR RELIGION. HOW CAN WE HELP THEM KNOW JESUS AS THE MESSIAH? TELL THEM ABOUT JESUS. (MAYBE SEND SOME RESTORE MONEY TO AN ORGANIZATION THAT DISTRIBUTES BIBLES IN ISREAL?) PRAY

IF YOU WERE A JEW AND COULD STILL WORSHIP IN THE TEMPLE AND COULD STILL DO ATONMENT SACRIFICES FOR SIN. WHAT WOULD YOU BE MISSING?

JOY. BEFORE THE BLOOD FINISHES FLOWING FROM THEIR SIN SACRIFICE. THEY HAVE SINNED AGAIN. THEY ARE NEVER CLEAN BEFORE GOD. THEY NEVER HAVE THE JOY OF KNOWING GOD. KNOWING HIS PROVISION OF THE PERFECT SACRIFICE JESUS. THEY DONT KNOW HIS GRACE IS SUFFICENT AND SO THEY HAVEN'T EXPERIENCED JOY IN VICTORY OVER SIN IN THEIR LIVES THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS AS MESSIAH.

sharing life together: HOW IS THE BATTLE WITH SIN IN YOUR LIFE GOING?

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT WE AS A FAMILY CAN HELP YOU WITH?

growing in truth: WHATS THE MAIN POINT OF THE PASSAGE TODAY? THE DESTRUCTION OF THE TEMPLE IN WAS PROPHESIED BY JESUS TO BE A HORRIFIC EVENT. FOREVER CHANGING THE RELIGIOUS LANDSCAPE FOR THE JEWS.
